September Resident of the Month - Heartly

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Meet Heartly!

We chose Heartly as the resident of the month for September because after a year of being at Wallflower she has started to come out of her shell and explore the farm!

Heartly came to Wallflower in the winter of 2021. She was rescued by another farm and was well taken care of, however when her caretaker was diagnosed with a serious health condition they knew she needed a place that could give her the attention she deserves.

She spent her first couple winters cozying up in the barn with Maple, Yvie, Hazel, and Chance. She was very timid and was not a fan of too much attention. Once the weather warmed up this year Heartly started to make her way outside and started exploring all the nooks and crannies of the farm.

When someone new arrives to the farm it can take them a while to warm up to others. Sometimes it takes them no time at all, other times – like in Heartly’s case, it can take months. This could be for a couple reasons, past trauma, weather, personality, or depression. When a pig is removed from their old home they sometimes go through a period of depression, we try to help them through that time with love, safety, and of course snacks!

One of the biggest changes we noticed in Heartly was her tolerance for humans. She now walks up to us regularly (especially if there is a treat involved)! She is still a bit nervous about rolling over for belly rubs, but if you get the right spot she’ll partially roll over. We know she’ll get there eventually!

Fun Fact: Heartly's pink spots around her mouth make it look like she is wearing lipstick!

Heartly is a special part of our farm and we are so happy to be a part of her journey. If you would like to help support Heartly please consider sponsoring her!
